Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition among adults over the age of 60 and is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. It gradually damages the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly. Smoking is a common cause of Macular Degeneration in young adults?
For some patients, AMD advances so slowly that vision loss does not occur for a very long time, while other patients may experience the disorder progressing faster — leading to a loss of vision in one or both eyes. The vision loss caused by AMD makes it difficult to recognize faces, drive a car, read, print, or other daily tasks.
The early and intermediate stages of AMD usually start without symptoms. A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to detect AMD.
With early diagnosis and proper treatment, you can delay or in some cases stop the progression of AMD. The earlier it is detected, the better your chances of keeping your vision.
